1998 PDQ 36 LRC — Georgetown, SC

A 1998 PDQ 36 LRC at Georgetown, South Carolina, asking $95,000 through yachtsite.com, 31 days out. PDQ Yachts built these at Whitby, Ontario, to an Alan Slater design — 36.42 ft of hull on 18.25 ft of beam, a sloop-rigged sailing catamaran narrow enough for an ordinary powerboat slip. LRC is Long Range Cruiser, and despite the letters this is no powercat but the Mark II specification, inboard diesels in place of the base boat's outboards, with tankage and rigging to match. Roughly a hundred were built to 2003, and sisters reach the market rarely.

Two cautions. The title says the hull was extended to 39 feet while our own length record still reads 36, so the stretch is the seller's claim, unverified — and a lengthened boat is no longer a standard 36 LRC. Point a surveyor at the scarf into the original mouldings first. We have not seen this boat.

On price it sits at the ceiling of the under-$100k catamaran band, where the same money buys 38 to 39.5 feet of similar vintage. You are paying for the yard's build and the long-range spec rather than for length; what the extension does to that depends on how it was done. It is a two-hander's liveaboard before anything else.

Same year, same money, the opposite instinct: the 1998 John Shuttleworth Ocean Cheetah 37 at Deltaville, Virginia — also $95,000, 39.5 ft, a performance design rather than a heavy cruiser.

The production alternative at the identical price is the 1995 Fountaine Pajot Athena 38 at Saint Augustine, three years older.

And where money buys years instead of feet, the 2013 Gemini Legacy 35 at Green Cove Springs asks $44,990 more for a hull fifteen years younger.

But if it is the PDQ build you are after, this is the one to survey first:
