Every boat is an argument its designer already had — with the sea, with the budget, with physics. Learn to read the argument and the brochure stops being able to lie to you.

What to weigh in a design

Hull count is a life decision, not a spec. One hull heels and carries; two give you the apartment; three give you speed with a keel's manners. Nothing else on the sheet matters until this is settled — the cruising-trimaran question walks the whole argument.

Displacement against length is the design's temperament: light boats accelerate, feel everything and forgive nothing above their payload; heavy boats shrug off your gear and your mistakes and arrive later. Sail area against displacement is the throttle the designer bolted on — in our files it runs from a NEEL 51's sensible 22 to the F-32SR's unhinged 66, and that one number tells you which church a boat prays in.

Beam and draft decide where you can go and what you'll pay to stay — wide multihull beam is stability and living space billed nightly by every marina; shallow boards and folding amas are the designer handing you anchorages and trailers the keelboats can't reach. And construction is the promise that outlives the brochure: foam-sandwich and infusion hold their stiffness and their value; how a forty-year-old example survived is written in our listing files, not in the spec sheet.

Then there is the signature. A designer's boats repeat their convictions across decades — which is why reading the designer is the shortcut to reading any single boat.
