Lowe

Lowe was founded in 1971 by Carl and Dianna Lowe at Lebanon, Missouri, and the aluminum ran in the family before the company existed — Dianna's father, J.B. Appleby, built some of the earliest aluminum boats in the country. The firm started as Lowe Line, bending jon boats and canoes, added its first pontoon in 1979, took the shorter name in 1981, and then rode the consolidation wave through three owners: OMC in 1988, Genmar in 2001, and since 2004 the Brunswick Boat Group, which still builds every Lowe in Lebanon. Half a century in, the job description has never changed: the most aluminum boat for the fewest dollars.

Be clear-eyed about what that sentence buys and what it does not. The case for is real: Lowe's fishing owners recommend the brand at rates the premium yards would envy, the function-per-dollar on the pontoon lines is genuine, and the company has a long reputation for honoring its warranties. The case against is just as consistent, and it is written in the materials. Owner surveys at PontoonHQ and the forum record fault lighter-gauge aluminum than the dearer brands, furniture and vinyl that tire within three or four seasons in high-UV states, a ride that gets loud in a chop, and entry-level trailer packages specified to the price rather than the load. None of it is hidden and none of it is structural; it is the honest shape of a value brand, and it tells you exactly where to look on a used one — sit on every seat, open every gate, and read the sun damage as a diary of how the boat was kept.

On our shelf the brand shows both faces — Super Sport family pontoons, fishing SF models and Roughneck workboats among the live askings. The one we have been through is the family boat, three seasons old at roughly half its new price:

Buy a Lowe when the errand matters more than the upholstery and the price gap funds the difference. Start with the SS 230, put it against its rivals on the pontoons under $50k, and the wider fleet is on the powerboat shelf.
