Sylvan

Sylvan has been at the pontoon business since 1948, when the Sylvan Boat Company set up in Wolcott, Indiana building houseboats and deck boats for the small-lake crowd, and it has spent most of the decades since as the market's quiet experimenter. It was the first yard to put colored side panels on a pontoon fence — the moment the breed stopped looking like scaffolding — and among the first to chase real performance from the platform, developing its RPT and SPX tube shapes to carry the horsepower the tow-sports crowd started demanding. Since 1969 it has belonged to the Schrock family's Smoker Craft group at New Paris, Indiana — five brands under one of the last big family-owned aluminum boatworks in America.

The experimenting cuts both ways, and a used buyer should know exactly where. The RPT performance logs — round on top, veed below, sold as a speed-and-handling upgrade — compiled a genuine failure record in their early years: owner threads on iboats and Pontoon Forums document cracked nose welds and repeat leaks, and salvage dealers reported that nearly every RPT tube crossing their yards was a warranty replacement. Sylvan honored those warranties and later revised the design, but on a used boat the question survives the fix: which tubes does this one wear? Round logs, no story. RPT, ask for a pressure test before you ask anything else.

The standard boats are a different conversation. Power Boating Magazine ran the Mirage 8522 — the yard's volume family cruiser, and the model we carry — into the mid-30s with a 150 on the transom and called the handling crisp and free of surprises, which for a 24-foot floating porch is the compliment that matters:

The honest summary: a Sylvan is the enthusiast's pick of its family stable — more layout ideas and more hull ambition than its price class, from a firm that answers its warranty mail — bought with one specific question asked first.
