Centurion

Centurion invented the boat this whole shelf is named for. Rick and Pam Lee took their first order by telephone in 1976 and built from Merced, California under the Fineline Industries name, and while every inboard yard eventually pivoted to wakesurfing, Centurion got there first — the purpose-built wakesurf towboat was its idea, and it founded the World Wake Surfing Championships to prove the point. The Enzo, launched in the early 2000s with a hull drawn for the surf wave rather than adapted to it, became the company's flagship and the official tow boat of those world championships. When surfing behind boats became the industry's whole economy a decade later, the segment was standing on Merced's patent.

The 2000s boats deserve both halves of their record. The magazine tests of the Enzo era were warm — boats.com found the SV230's gelcoat the most outstanding workmanship on the boat, and Wakeboarding logged the SV240's five-tank, 1,250-pound ballast system throwing a clean, meaty wake — while the ownership record of the same years is where the Fineline era shows: a 2007 Coast Guard recall of 293 boats for tower Heim bolts that could fail, and forum-era grievances that run to hardware and finish rather than to the hull. The reconciliation is the useful part: the wave idea was ahead of the build that carried it, so a 2000s Centurion is bought with a wrench in hand — tower fittings, hardware, ballast plumbing — and the hull's genius comes at a survivor's discount:

Buy a modern Centurion for a world-championship wave under a disciplined parent; buy a 2000s one for the same idea at a fraction, priced for the fittings you will replace. Its rivals are drawn up on the wake and ski boats under $100k.
