A trimaran does not have to be big to be built for open water, and it does not have to fold to be worth owning. This shelf is the wider answer to the offshore question: trimarans from twenty-eight feet up whose design carries an ocean rating — Category A certification from the builder, or a crossing record the boat's own family has already proven — regardless of whether the amas come in for the road.

The small Danish end is the surprise. Quorning's Dragonfly 32s and the older Dragonfly 1000 are Category A boats at thirty-two feet, which is a sentence that reads oddly to anyone raised on monohull thinking, where thirty feet means coastal. A well-built trimaran of that size has the stability and the reserve buoyancy to be out there; what it does not have is the interior volume or the tankage to make it pleasant for long, and that is the honest trade rather than a safety one.

The French end is the opposite argument. NEEL's 43, 45, 47 and 51 are ocean cruising trimarans that never fold and never intended to: the whole design premise is a central hull you live in with a saloon at eye level and two floats doing the work. They cost several times what the small boats cost, they need a wide berth, and they cross oceans with a couple aboard and no drama. Between the two sits Rapido, which builds a folding forty that is genuinely fast and genuinely certified, and Corsair's 37, the biggest boat that yard has folded.

If the folding matters more than anything — if the plan is a driveway rather than a marina — the stricter folding trimarans that can cross an ocean shelf is the same evidence with the tighter filter. If speed on protected water is the real goal, the trailerable trimarans are the cheaper and simpler answer, and nobody should buy an ocean rating they will never use.
