Fifty thousand dollars is the most honest number in sailing — the budget where real cruising starts and marketing stops working. It buys a boat that can take you somewhere, and it buys it in three quite different shapes, which is what makes this the most interesting shelf we keep.

The monohull is what most of this money buys and what the forums will tell you to buy: a thirty-something production cruiser from the seventies through the nineties, or one of the heavy classics — the Westsail 32s, the Cape Dory 30s — that people cross oceans in and argue about forever. You get the most boat per dollar here and a keel under you. The systems will be at or past end of life, which is true of every hull at this price.

The folding trimaran buys speed and a driveway instead of a slip. An F-24 or a Dragonfly 800 in the twenties will do thirteen knots and comes home on a trailer, which removes the second-biggest cost of boat ownership after the boat itself. What it costs you is interior: two people cruise a small Corsair or Quorning tri comfortably, four do not. The catamaran is the hardest of the three to find under fifty — the older, smaller hulls only, a Gemini or a thirty-something from the eighties — and it buys living space and level sailing at the price of performance and a wider, dearer berth.

What to check does not change with the hull: rigging age, engine hours against service history, and whether the deck core is dry where the hardware bolts through.
